Bird Names for Girls (or Anyone Who Wants to Fly)

It’s funny—when I wrote a story about a girl who could change into a bird, I thought for sure I would end up giving her a bird name. My Google search history was definitely full of bird names for girls. But I ended up giving Hannah a bird-like last name (Sterling, similar to starling) and kept the list of other names in my back pocket for other characters.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I can’t share my findings on the internet! Here’s a little list of bird names for girls, or anyone else who feels like stretching their wings. (Honestly, some of these could make good enby names, too.)

If you have any other bird name suggestions, let me know in the comments!

Bird Names for Girls

Dove: English, dove.

Jemima: Hebrew origin, meaning “dove”. (Which is funny, because when I think of bird names for girls, I think of Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck. I feel like a puddle-dove would be way wetter and a thousand times angrier than a duck that got itself wet.)

Kestrel: English, a kind of small hawk. Kestrel has roots in the Old French word crecelle, meaning “rattle”, which supposedly describes the bird’s call. You can listen to a kestrel making noises here. She doesn’t rattle like a maraca, but she gets a little vibrato going. 😊

Lark: English, a kind of songbird.

Raven: English, raven.

Robin: English, robin.

Teal: English, after a kind of duck with blue-green feathers.

Wren: English, wren. Another kind of adorable songbird.

Zipporah: Hebrew origin, meaning “bird”
