Protective Crystals and Protection Stones

Protective Crystals and Protection Stones

For The Raven Mocker, I knew I wanted to bring some protection stones and protective crystals into play. After all, when a mythological creature is after you and your friends, you’re going to want all the protection you can get!

“I’m going to give you something,” Lily Mae said. The contents of the first box clinked and jingled as she raked her fingers through. “Aha! Here we go.”

Hannah blinked in surprise as Lily Mae held up a selection of colorful stones, black and red and blue, each one no larger than a quarter. Their sides had been polished to a glossy sheen. They were beautiful, Hannah thought, but they seemed unlikely to help in the event of strange smoke beings coming back.

Jack must have had the same thought. He cleared his throat delicately. “Um…rocks?”

“Not rocks. Stones,” Lily Mae corrected. “All with protective properties. Jasper, black amber, lapis lazuli, turquoise…just tuck them into your pockets for now. It should turn any sort of evil spirit away from you.”

Cultures around the world have used special stones and crystals for protection pretty much forever. It’s still easy to find them everywhere today, from Instagram posts to New Age jewelry shops. I personally just like these protection stones and crystals because they are so pretty, but I do know some people who say they feel a bit better with a crystal for protection tucked in their pocket or hanging around their neck.

Meanings of Common Protection Stones

Jasper comes in several colors, from red to black. Cultures worldwide used this stone for special protection, and it’s a great stone for making special engraved seals, signet rings, and talismans. In terms of its properties, jasper was a strong protection stone that could protect you in both the physical and spiritual realms.

Black Amber: Lily Mae gives Finn a piece of black amber. This protection stone is meant to protect the bearer from psychic attack by creating a shield his or her energy. He should really hang onto that stone…

Black Onyx: People traditionally wore this protection stone when going into battle against their enemies or when they needed protection in a conflict. On the psychic plane, it’s supposed to deflect negative energy.

Obsidian: People wore this protection stone to protect themselves from physical harm— or to repel any emotional or psychic attacks.

Lapis Lazuli: This protection stone is deep blue in color. (Renaissance painters used crushed lapis lazuli to make blue paint!) The calming blue color makes this the ideal protection stone for people who need mental clarity and connection, so it’s a good stone for writers to have around. (I actually have two small lapis lazuli stones, haha.)

Turquoise: The name of this protective stone is French—‘Turquoise’ means ‘Turkish’ stone. It exists in many places in the world, though, from the Southwest US to Tibet. Cool, huh? This is another favorite stone of mine—I love the pretty blue-green color. This stone is said to be good for protection, healing, and deepening connections to the spiritual world. It’s frequently included in jewelry made by Native American artists: here’s a pin made by Navajo jewelry artist Kee Joe Benally.

Amethyst crystal: This protective crystal is a kind of quartz, and it has another great color profile—it comes in varying shades of purple. Lore says that amethyst is a healing crystal with powerful protective properties—it’s supposed to drive away nightmares and protect the bearer from psychic attack.
